Given series formed in definite pattern and next number follows the predecessor.

1st soln:
Increasing even number difference. 
Difference between 6 & 2 is 4
12 & 6 is 6 and so on.
20 & 30 is 10 and next should be 12.

So, 30+12=42

2nd soln:

$2=1\times2$
$6=2\times3$
$12=3\times4$
$20=4\times5$
$30=5\times6$

So, next should be product of 6 & 7.
$7\times6=42$
